Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw Conferred With Honorary Doctorate from Deakin University, Australia

Bangalore, India, March 13, 2019

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Chairperson & Managing Director of Biocon Ltd., has been conferred with the ‘Honorary Doctorate’ by Deakin University, a leading Global University based in Victoria, Australia.

Kiran has been recognized for her pioneering entrepreneurial role in the field of biotechnology and for her sustained significant contribution to Industry-Academia collaboration between Australia & India.

Speaking on the occasion, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, CMD of Biocon, said: “I am immensely proud to receive this coveted recognition from the prestigious Deakin University of Australia and feel even more inspired to be presented with this honour in the year when Deakin University is celebrating 25 years of association with India, the longest sustained period of engagement by any Australian University with India.”

Deakin Honorary Doctorates program recognizes eminent individuals who have made an inspiring or significant and sustained contribution to the community aligned to the University's objectives. Past recipients of Deakin University Honorary Doctorates include eminent leaders like Julia Gillard, Australia’s first female Prime Minister.

Deakin University, established in 1974, is ranked amongst the Top 1% major international universities. Its South Asian Operations commenced in 1994 at New Delhi and it has competed 25 years in India.

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw has also been appointed as Australian Global Alumni Ambassador by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Australia in 2016 and she is also the Victorian Business Ambassador for the State Govt. of Victoria, Australia.

She has been felicitated with several honorary doctorates in the past from global universities like Ballarat (2004), University of Abertay (2007), University of Glasgow (2008), Heriot-Watt University (2008), National University of Ireland (2012) and Trinity College, Dublin (2012) for her pre-eminent contributions in the field of biotechnology.

She is also a Member of the Board of Trustees of the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA and more recently she has been elected as a Member of the National Academy of Engineering, USA.

About Deakin Honorary Doctorates: Deakin Honorary Doctorates are awarded by the University Council to honour individuals’ inspiring achievements and contributions to the community aligned to the University’s objectives. Deakin Honorary Doctorates are not associated with a specific academic discipline. Instead they are accompanied by a citation explaining the achievements being honoured. Therefore Deakin honorary degrees are clearly distinguished from degrees earned by fulfilling academic requirements. These honour an individual’s outstanding contribution to a specific field or to a range of fields beyond traditional disciplinary categories.
